Dem englischen Komponisten Andrew Lloyd Webber ist es in den vergangenen fünfzehn Jahren gelungen, einen Welterfolg nach dem anderen zu produzieren: auf das berühmte Musical und den Film 'Jesus Christ Superstar' aus dem Jahr 1971 folgten 'Evita' (1976), 'Cats' (1981), 'Song and Dance' (1982, eine Kombination aus 'Variations' und 'Tell me on a Sunday'), 'Starlight Express' (1984) und 'Requiem' (1985). Sein Musical 'The Phantom of the Opera' hatte 1986 mit Sarah Brightman und Michael Crawford in den Hauptrollen in London Premiere. Dieses Musical gewann sowohl den Laurence Olivier Award als auch den Evening Standard Drama Award für das 'Best Musical of 1986'.
